the first event in this summer series features Liam Coady and is hosted by Alessandra Naccarato. thursday the 18th of june. come for dinner, stay for vegan chocolate cake & an inspiring evening of slam poetry and storytelling!
Liam Coady is a sweat’s drop of sunset, a wedge of a watermark, and a bit of a bush wolf. Winner of the 2011 National Poetry Slam, and finalist for the 2014 Canadian Individual Poetry Slam, Coady has been recognized across Canada for his work as a spoken word poet, actor, performance creator, and dramaturge. He recently released the chapbook Talks with the Immortal Jellyfish.
Alessandra Naccarato is an award-winning writer, performer and educator. Winner of the 2015 RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for poetry, and a finalist for the 2014 CBC Poetry Prize, her work has appeared across Canada and the United States. She has toured nationally and internationally as a spoken word poet, facilitated hundreds of creative writing workshops across the country, and is currently completing an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia.

This classic 1975 film stars Jack Nicholson (Randall McMurphy), a man with a criminal past who has once again gotten himself into trouble with the law. To escape labor duties in prison, McMurphy pleads insanity and is sent to a ward for the mentally unstable. Once here, McMurphy both endures and stands witness to the abuse and degradation of the oppressive Nurse Ratched, who gains superiority and power through the flaws of the other inmates. McMurphy and the other inmates band together to make a rebellious stance against the atrocious Nurse.
Considered to be one of the greatest American films, Ken Kesey’s picture went on to win a total of eight Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Jack Nicholson, Best Actress for Louise Fletcher (Ratched), Best Direction for Forman, Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Laurence Hauben and Bo Goldman.
