“The sandwich I love is the vegan burger — big enough to share and super delicious! The books are all revolutionary and so are the owners: not your ordinary purveyors of fine coffee, there’s a touch of the mystical about this place. Try the Chai!”

This cafe is the sort of place I always hope to discover on trips to small, remote communities. A small business offering ethical foods, with an internationally-minded and carefully curated bookshelf. A place where any sort of traveller would find something unique to be inspired by – whether its relating to food, architecture, music, art, philosophy or intentional living. This is a place to seek knowledge and expand your perspective.
Hurray for the owners! Who painstakingly create incredibly inclusive (and amazingly appealing) food offerings for anyone who might wander in their door – gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, nut free, processed food free (and so many other things that I can’t even articulate..)
This beautiful, comfortable space highlights the environmental values of the owners with natural wood features, handmade mosaic tables and cob wall design. With plenty of space to spread out and relax with a group, or curl up in your own corner with a new book.
This cafe is not for you if industrial meat products and industrial dairy products are essential for you in every meal – though there is an abundance of delicious, nutritious alternatives for any item that may be more familiar to you.
The owners are friendly, thoughtful and sincere – with a healthy dose of humour and sass for their regular customers. I commend them for offering a variety of practical resources for young folks who may not have other support on the island. In this sense they act as an anchor of service in the community – offering a radically inclusive space for learning about food, gender, sexuality, abuse and other high impact issues for individuals.
I thank them from the bottom of my heart for offering these resources freely to young people (and everyone) who visit them.
“Morningside is an experience… Walk in slowly and quietly. Take a moment to read the walls and absorb the energy and the message they are offering you. Reflect for a moment… You will then understand that this is a place where the food is prepared with a deep respect for the environment and for your body. My personal favourites are the chai lattés, that are exceptional, paired with a slice of cake (yes, healthy and delicious) or a muffin. I always leave feeling happy and satiated. But, you can feed more than just your body; Morningside is also a book and music store. The book selection is varied and exceptional, and all of it sure to educate and heal you. My husband and I have been making Morningside a special treat to be anticipated and then enjoyed whenever we go to Salt Spring Island. We opened ourselves to the experience of Morningside and have been given a gift of caring and generosity.”
I’ve been visiting Morningside Bakery and Bookstore for over ten years. Just took a friend and had the best afternoon “snack” ever. We had a fabulous vegan burger and a delicious egg panini (absolute heaven- toasty wonderful hand crafted bread garnished with wonderful spices and beautiful fresh greens!)–we had no appetite for hours! Really good food. I have ordered the egg panini for years and it’s always the same kind of hand made slow cooked wonderful. The place is designed so interestingly too- reminds me of Mama’s Fishouse on Maui. The selection of books and music is wonderful-they’ve gone to the trouble of finding things so timely and important that you always wanted to read but didn’t quite know where to find. Take your time and enjoy.
I did notice when I went to the ratings there were mostly wonderful, but a few negative ones. I was surprised, but I have to say that the owners work incredibly hard to bring the healthiest most delicious food that feeds your body and soul- and maybe if a customer acts stupid or is ignorant of the important food issues in the world then… they may not suffer fools gladly. Their passion clearly shows and thank god for people that truly care. I’ve always gotten a beautiful smile and had a lovely time over the many years I’ve visited-so not quite sure what happened to those folks. Go see for yourself, you won’t regret it!
I just saw Cowspiracy, and understand why eating well is so important. After having the “burger” at Morningside, I want to know more. Vegan can be so amazingly delicious and filling and nourishing, I won’t miss eating animals ever again, and understand now. Thanks for the great food, the passion and the much needed light on issues.
Vegan or Omnivore- you will love the great food, great architecture, books and music!
“Incredible Food! A Must Try!”
Well worth the wait. Family run business so come equipped with patience. Best vegan food I have ever eaten in my life. Seriously a must try! Food is fresh, creative, unique and presented well. Prices are very good and portions are large.
“We moved to Salt Spring just over three months ago and this is a destination at least weekly for us. When you arrive in Fulford village you will notice the quaint beauty of all the little shops. Do yourself a favor and make a point to stop in Morningside Cafe/Bookstore.
ou are in for a real treat. The food is made with incredible awareness, and highest quality ingredients. I have heard more than once another customer asking how they do it. Manet and Allen are the owners and tirelessly spend time making you feel welcome. The food and how it is served, is an experience all too missing in most cafes today. Real food, be sure to get a loaf of bread. Soaked grains hand milled freshly. The drinks are incredible made with nurturing care. It’s the most fulfilling experience to be there. Also available, an array of carefully chosen books on relevant topics. A cafe with two people who are running more than a business. Morningside is a place to have an intelligent, informative discussion with people who truly care for the planet and all it’s sentient beings. Bring your appetite, your thirst and a bit of time for conversing. You’ll be glad you did. Oh, and buy a book this is an Island treasure not to be missed.”
