we are summer arrivers to saltspring island and the anticipation of disembarking from the ferry is preceded by the excitement of knowing that our first stop on the island will be morningside bakery. for almost nine years now, we drive over the metal plank of the ferry, turn immediately to the right, find a spot to park in the shade, and walk into the open arms and grand smiles of morningside. alan and manot have created a space that is both deliciously organic in food and mental atmosphere. ever creative, we look forward to the bakery’s colors, textures, scents, and warmth. morningside is a hub of local creativity that attracts the island’s talents and eclectics. all strangers coming into the cafe leave with a precious appreciation. as part-timers, morningside was a meaningful reason we purchased land on saltspring, and the cafe helped to integrate us into the community. thanks be to morningside.

i say i am going to the ‘big city’ when i go down to fulford to enjoy this incredible cafe, as each time the experience is new and diverse. everything is organic, the patrons are passionate about the environment – very interesting to converse with, and the atmosphere is second to none – what a beautiful place. certainly the best matcha in town! i look forward to the music and movie nights at morningside.

morningside is more than a bakery – it is an experience that will elevate your awareness and desire for a more serene world. i invite you to indulge in the fragrant teas and coffees, the savoury organic fare and the selection of inspiring books that line the walls. morningside establishes the path for a kinder, gentler existence……its a path you will be glad you ventured on.

if you are looking for the real thing this is it.

tucked away within 30 paces from the fulford harbour ferry terminal, (20 paces off the dock and 10 paces to the right) you will find a tiny oasis with style and thought put into every square meter.

mano will greet you in her native french canadian accent and offer her recommendations for a healthy reprieve and alan will bring you up to date on the latest green energy technology while you select a wide variety of organic pastries, breads, tea, coffee, or chai…. oh and there is an excellent mini book store of relevant authors consistent with an organic view of the world.

these locals bring you into their custom hand finished space (created out of alan’s imagination and manon’s european sensibility) gently and with out attitude while offering free wifi combining the feel of the north west end of middle-earth and the first flying machine… (you have to see it to understand).

i encourage you to linger and in short order you will be current on the latest in local green and organic initiatives while a continuous line of eco-focused clientele stream in and out.

whenever we are on ssi, we make it a point to visit the morningside cafe. we love their dedication and their mindfulness. manon is a true artisan, no one makes better matcha green tea lattes, we are vegan and she transcends the ordinary, and her raw treats are to live for, seriously, to live for! we love alan’s & manon’s book and music selection – very mindful, informative, inspiring stuff. we could tell you more, but then why spoil the magic! can hardly wait to give their new heated patio a go, very groovy organic space overall; and now video nights & more – awesome. and yes, you can find bliss there, not just a wonderful experience, they have the most amazing beautiful, delicious coconut ice cream. so much in such a cozy well thought out space. we love it there, and look forward in seeing and experiencing it again. it is one of the major reasons why we go to ssi. lots of love

wow, this is a hot spot for food on salt spring island. the space at morningside is one of a kind, huge artistic handmade wooden tables and unique furniture makes you want to sit back for awhile. i ordered a veggie burger and that is why i am writing this review, it was the best burger i have ever eaten. the owners are amazing people and truly place a great deal of care into what they offer. go check it out, you won’t be let down.

the unique, original design of this place make it a comfortable place to “hang out’. pleasing to the senses in all ways. whether it be the bread, the baked goods, the raw chocolate treats or the matcha, they are all of the finest quality. i stop in here several times a week to enjoy a break and catch up on the scene.

not only does morningside organic bakery offer great food, treats and delicious drinks – but they offer saltspring island an edge that is sorely needed. i feel like every time i go in there i am bound to have an interesting conversation about issues in the world that are important to me. i connect with the people who frequent the cafe and the owners manon and alan. they are always there to listen, give feedback and advice, and enlighten me to something new about the world – both physicaly and metaphysicaly. i have never tried anything like manons raw chocolatates – they are incredible. the sandwiches are also definitely somethin else!soo good. i feel like they are a pivotal establishment for our island and i am thankful they have remained to real and unique for ten years., thankyou morningside!

on the last day of a two week bike touring and camping trip on the lovely island of salt spring, we fell upon the gem that is aorningside. as soon as we entered, we felt the energy of a place infused with thought, compassion and a little bit of magic. a custom-made potion immediately made my belly feel better, and upon biting into a coconut raw treat my partner gushed, “omg my tongue just had an o.” yup, it’s that good: you feel transformed just being there, surrounded by beautiful books, and the food is bliss. iloved it so much that i applied for a job at morningside! so maybe we’ll see each other there one day soon ;) sincerely, vie
